I have designed Into the Woods several times. This was actually my first time designing it for a proscenium stage. There were static platforms creating a lot of entrances, exits, and traffic flow. In addition, there was a revolve stage left that carried Rapunzel’s tower (a tree on the back side). SR was another large tree, haunted by Cinderella’s mother, which fell over during one of the giant’s rampages.
On the cyclorama is projected the shapes of trees. These were carefully engineered to read like shadows and silhouttes, rather than as pictures. They panned right and left from scene to scene, but the would begin moving slowly, and coast into place, as if being moved by hand while hanging on a track.
