You Can’t Take It With You is a wonderful box-set to design. It does not need to change setting, or perform any technical tricks at all. However, it needs to reflect the clutter, the craziness, the eccentricity, the playfulness, and the love of the many people who live in this house.
This design began with blue in the walls. The director asked to lean more towards sepia tones in the design, and that change was made for the final rendering. Dressing the set was an ongoing thing throughout the last weeks of production, as more and more unusual objects were brought in and placed someplace on the set. These are the abandoned toys and projects of this family.
