This is a good representation of what would be helpful to us for the workshop.

We could change this on site to accomodate the actual space and available equipment.

Friday, December 4

  1. History of Projections
  2. About Projectors
  3. Activities: Improv acting with changing projection environments.

friday01

A simple screen for either front or rear projection would be helpful for lecturing. Any of the projectors could be focused on it.

If this were two screens instead of one, we could have two projectors on it. It could also be one large cyclorama, with two projectors.

Movable white flats of some kind would help with experimentation and quick demonstrations.

Saturday, December 5

Same setup is anticipated as for Friday.

  1. Generating Media
  2. Controlling Media
  3. Activities:  Incorporating faux shadows into performance.
  4. Activities:  Emulating projection-mapping using simpler software.
  5. Reverse-engineering popular projection sequences.

Sunday, December 6

  1. Front vs. Rear Projection
  2. Properties of Rear-Projection screens
  3. Alternatives to standard screens
  4. Projecting on Black Surfaces
  5. Projecting on Scrim and Fabric
  6. Integrating projections into the show
  7. Lighting and Set Design for Projections
  8. Multiple Screens as One Screen
  9. Activities:  Creating 3D environments using scrim with projections
  10. Activities:  Actors as a part of the visual composition.

If we have black or gray rear-projection screens, it would be good to be able to play with them. Perhaps they could be mounted to be movable somehow.

Do the black curtains open easily? If they do, this could be useful for Sunday’s session, and possibly other times as well.
sunday02
Here you are seeing two projection surfaces. One is either front or rear-projection upstage. The other is a white scrim downstage. I would like to create this sort of arrangement, with side-lighting in between them. This would probably be for Sunday.

Monday, December 7

Controlling projections using alternate methods.
Mathematically generated graphics reacting to improvisational movement.

monday01
This would be a great setup for this. Two projectors focused straight down, creating a single field on a white or gray floor.
monday02
If it is not reasonable to do this with two projectors straight-down, we could do this with one projector, at a high angle, as shown here.
If we can, I would love to have the two Nec pa 622 units on rolling carts, each with its own laptop if possible. This would be great for Monday's activities, but it could be useful for the entire workshop, too, at times.
