Lighting Design
• I design lighting extensively for theatre and dance. My goals are always to:

- have the greatest potential and flexibility in a plot;
- have enough organization and control that tech is both inspired and fun;
- make very good use of everyone's time.

•  Every show has its own set of conventions for lighting.   We plan these beforehand and discover more at tech.   Lighting directs focus on stage, generates symbolism, underscores emotion, and complements or reinforces the text at need.   A perfectly executed lighting cue can move the audience to tears.     I enjoy finding ways to use color in each show, as well as direction, and movement.   I find gobos and gobo washes to be very useful supports of the work of the performers.

•  I love all lighting instruments. I enjoy working with moving lights, and writing complicated, cuey sequences for the right shows.  In my classes, I sometimes have students focus exactly one light for a dramatic reading, in order to drive home the power of simplicity.   Knowing how much or how little to use is a choice that should always be fun.

•   When the process is enjoyable, the product is good.
